In the years preceding 1967, Colombian journalist and literary writer Gabriel García Márquez put pen to paper on one of his most famous works – “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” In this critically acclaimed novel, he would create a cultural icon, a symbol for a nation, and the inspiration for a Colombia National Team jersey at FIFA World Cup 26™.
In his book, Márquez established the yellow butterfly as a symbol of hope, of happiness, of change. Clouds of yellow butterflies would appear as characters entered a room, rainstorms would pour for years on end and other impossible feats of nature’s mysticism would peak a reader’s imagination. His blending of the real life with the mystical became known as a literary device by the name of “magical realism” and it’s the device that inspires the Colombia 26/27 Home Jersey by adidas.
On the kit, yellow butterfly wings flitter and flutter across the chest in an all-over print, symbolic of the joy the Colombian international team has displayed at previous FIFA World Cups™, the hope the nation has as they support their team, and the change the players seek on the field to make their furthest tournament run yet.
Finished off with a v neck collar, flat-knit cuffs and a back neck sign off simply reading “Colombia,” this kit is a symbol of a nation, a metaphor for a federation’s metamorphosis.
