Belgium and adidas reach deep into the realm of the abstract with their 26/27 away jersey. A surreal combination of colors and floating orbs create a depiction that is just that – Surrealism. Calling to mind famous artwork by Belgian painter Rene Margritte, the jersey plays with his recurring painting motif of the floating orb.
In his artwork, Margritte would play with viewers’ expectations of reality by suspending these metallic orbs in spaces and areas that they shouldn’t inhabit. His works’ abstract meaning and physics-defying substance landed his paintings firmly in the style of Surrealism.
The art influence appears on a Belgium soccer jersey as adidas looks to draw direct lines form a country’s cultural background and identity to its soccer team. The Belgian National Team has such a talented lineup and is capable – at least in theory – of such a flourishing brand of football that it almost feels surreal to watch them play, after all.
